Independiente del Valle champion of the South American Recopa!

Independiente del Valle became champion of the Copa Sudamericana once morest Flamengo at the Maracaná. He got the victory on penalties.

In the first leg, the Ecuadorian club prevailed at home 1-0, while in the second leg Flamengo came back from behind: Giorgian De Arrascaeta scored in the 96th minute.

With a global result 1-1 they went to the extra time of 30 minutes. Since nothing changed, they went to penalties, where Independiente del Valle became champion 5-4.

The same man who scored the goal in the second half to keep Flamengo alive, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, was the one who missed the penalty that gave the Ecuadorian team the victory.

This is the third international cup that Independiente has won, following winning the 2019 Copa Sudamericana once morest Colón and the 2022 edition once morest São Paulo.

Flamengo – Independiente del Valle: they had already played the Recopa

Independiente del Valle and Flamengo had already met in the same instance of the competition, in the final of the 2020 Recopa Sudamericana. Flamengo had won the 2019 Copa Libertadores, while Independiente del Valle was the 2019 Copa Sudamericana champion.

On that occasion, the Brazilian club became champion with a 5-2 aggregate.
