Mount Kanlaon Volcano Shows Signs of Increased Activity, Prompting Alerts
Mount Kanlaon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, is exhibiting concerning signs of increased activity, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Recent observations reveal significant ground deformation, especially in the middle to upper sections of the volcano’s eastern flank. This swelling, detected since Friday evening, has raised alarms among scientists and local authorities.
At 7:20 p.m. on Friday, a sharp spike in inflationary tilt was recorded, indicating a sudden buildup of pressure within the volcano’s upper structure. Together, the southeastern flank showed signs of inflation, while the western flank experienced deflation. These contrasting movements suggest a complex interplay of forces beneath the surface, heightening concerns about a potential eruption.
Sulfur dioxide emissions, a key indicator of volcanic activity, averaged 5,763 tonnes on Friday.This figure remains consistent with levels observed since the volcano’s last major eruption on June 3, 2024. PHIVOLCS stated, “The overall parameters may indicate that the shallow magma conduit of the volcano is undergoing pressurization that may lead to an eruption broadly similar to the 9 December 2024 event.”
Currently, Mount Kanlaon is under Alert Level 3, signifying magmatic unrest. The volcano, which spans the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, has been closely monitored since its last eruption on December 9, 2024, at 3:03 p.m. That event prompted PHIVOLCS to elevate the alert status, urging heightened vigilance among local communities.
PHIVOLCS has also emphasized the need for local government units and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) councils to monitor weather conditions closely.“Local government units and DRRM councils must also vigilantly monitor weather conditions in case heavy rainfall occurs and generates lahars and sediment-laden streamflows in channels draining the southern flanks of the volcano,” the agency advised.
In addition to ground deformation and gas emissions, PHIVOLCS recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes on Friday, further underscoring the volcano’s restive state. These seismic activities, combined with the elevated sulfur dioxide levels, paint a picture of a volcano under significant stress.
