Increase in the price of scooters for public transport in Cuba is denounced 2024-07-11 17:31:42

In the midst of the current crisis and inflation, government reporters have denounced on social media the seemingly unjustified increase in the prices of so-called scooters for public transport in Cuba. Is this a local phenomenon or does it occur throughout Cuba?

In the city where the incident occurred, complaints have been made regarding the unjustified increase in these prices since January of this year. In January, following the increase decreed by the Cuban government for fuel, gas and electricity, private transporters were quick to increase passenger transport fares in several cities on the island, including Santa Clara, in the center of the country.

At that time, the Facebook page Fuerza del Pueblo, linked to the authorities in that province, reported that inspectors requested the cancellation of transport operating licenses and applied fines of 8,000 Cuban pesos to those transporters who altered the prices and rates approved in the capital of Villa Clara.

But, evidently, fines have no effect, and even less so if they are part of something temporary and there is not the desired number of inspectors to alleviate this indiscriminate increase in prices by private individuals who work for the state in many cases, with electric motorcycles rented to the state.

Price increase for scooters in Cuba

On July 9, pro-government journalist Francisnet Díaz, from the Vanguardia newspaper in Santa Clara, central Cuba, denounced on her Facebook profile the increase in prices of scooters there.

“The minimum price for scooters in Santa Clara is already 30 pesos. I just got one. The driver says that they agreed on it two weeks ago. You know,” he first denounced.

Another user added: “It’s 30 pesos to the park. They charged me 50 pesos from the terminal to the hospital. I don’t know if they also remembered. And the other thing is the cart drivers who have been charging the same prices for a while now and no one talks regarding them.”

In a later post, Díaz himself added that on the same day: “Now the other part of the story: I took another scooter back from the park to the hospital and the driver charged 20.00. In other words, the price ranges between the honest ones and the “faced ones.”

And the increase in the price of scooters in Cuba, is it local or is it happening throughout the country? Please comment on what is happening in your territory.
