Inconsistencies Uncovered: The SPÖ Party Leadership Shake-Up and the Missing Vote

Rückblick: The political bombshell that burst on Monday followingnoon surprisingly gave the SPÖ a new party leader – and replaced Hans Peter Doskozil following just two days.

What happened? On Saturday, Hans Peter Doskozil was declared the winner with 53 percent in Linz. But the official result was missing one vote. That made ORF moderator Martin Thür suspicious – he shared his displeasure on Twitter.

This question was investigated on Monday and the mistake was immediately discovered that Doskozil’s and Babler’s voices had been assigned incorrectly.

As a result, Michaela Grubesa, head of the election commission, announced on Monday followingnoon that the delegate votes had been swapped and that Andreas Babler is now the party leader.

But there were also inconsistencies in the new result. Both sides suddenly had one more vote than at the party congress, while the number of invalid votes remained the same.

Transported on a pallet

The SPÖ emphasized that the ballot papers for the extraordinary national party congress in Linz had been transported from Linz to Vienna in sealed packaging on a pallet. The ballot papers were kept in the federal office and were only opened once more yesterday in the course of the recount.

Recently, rumors had been raised that the slips of paper had reached Vienna unsealed in a bag.
