“My son’s head. There is no fracture, the Cullen doctor told me… Not only that, but they didn’t suture it and they sent us back to Samco in Santo Tomé to have it sewn up there. Incompetent, inhumane, zero empathy… Getting worse… The report from Dr. Mateo Ignacio Riera where he says there is no fracture or bone damage and he is being transferred to Samco for suturing… May God deliver us from those the hands…”

With these words published on her Facebook account, Cecilia described the nightmare her son Emiliano (24) went through, which led to a serious complaint against a doctor at the hospital in Cullen.

On my way to work

Early on Monday morning, Emiliano was cycling to work in a bakery when he was approached by three people near the Purina feed factory.

The assailants surrounded him and one of them gave him a brutal blow to the head which knocked him off the bike. Within minutes, they stripped him of his belongings, including his mobile phone and bicycle, before fleeing.

Fortunately, Emiliano did not lose consciousness and was able to reach the Purina factory, where employees helped him and reported what happened to 911.

Minutes later, emergency personnel first took him to Samco in Santo Tomé, and then he was transferred to Cullen Hospital.

However, the medical treatment that Emiliano received at Cullen was not up to the task.

Despite the blow to the head, a doctor from the said hospital informed the young man’s mother that he had no serious injuries and discharged him.

The professional explained that the boy only had a cut on his head, and that to do the suture he had to go back to Samco in Santo Tomé.

Surprise and indignation

But around noon on Monday, Emiliano was examined by an ART doctor who ordered an MRI, which revealed a skull fracture.

The medical negligence in the initial diagnosis caused outrage and concern in the young man’s family, who questioned how such a serious injury could be overlooked.

could have died

In the words of Emiliano’s mother: “It is a blessing that my son is alive. Other professionals explained to me that he could have had a seizure, bleeding or any other complication that would end his life.”

What that Cullen doctor did is unforgivable. On top of that, when I went to ask for explanations, they wouldn’t help me,” he concluded.
