Elisabeth Borne announced on Monday March 6 that the withholding tax on income would be modified for couples from 2025.
An evolution to take into account. Invited to France 5 on Monday, Elisabeth Borne announced that the tax rate would be individualized by default for all French tax households from 2025.
As a reminder, the withholding tax is intended to deduct tax each month before the payment of income.
The government explains on its website that it “allows you to determine the percentage of your income withheld for tax purposes”.
An inequality to be repaired for Elisabeth Borne
With regard to the tax household, the two members of a couple are deducted at the same rate (unless requested by taxpayers). Therefore, if one or other of the members of the couple has a lower income, they are subject to the same rate.
By announcing the individualization of the rate of calculation of the withholding tax in 2025, Elisabeth Borne intends to cure an inequality.
From this date, this new operation will be applied automatically. The member of the couple with the highest income will thus have a higher tax rate.
A provision which, for the Prime Minister, “will allow everyone’s income to be taken into account”.
