A particularly large number of women work in the low-wage sector. But not only the new minimum wage should make them better, promises Minister of Labor Heil.

With a view to the so-called Equal Pay Day, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil emphasized the importance of a higher minimum wage for women.

“I’m fighting for more equal pay on the labor market,” said the SPD politician before the international day of action for equal pay for women and men (March 7) on Sunday. “This includes better wages in care and an increase in the minimum wage to twelve euros, which will benefit women in particular.”

Previous data shows that the proportion of women in the low-wage sector is particularly high. On Monday, the Federal Statistical Office presented new data on the gender pay gap for the year 2021.

Heil said that unequal burdens in everyday life are also a cause of the gender pay gap. “We are continuing to expand all-day care for this purpose. And for this we want to create a voucher system for everyday helpers to improve the compatibility of family and work. »

So far, the minimum wage is 9.82 euros. An adjustment to EUR 10.45 is already planned for July 1st. On October 1, the level of the lower wage limit is to be raised once to 12 euros outside of the usual increase steps.
