Trade union centers continue their mobilization for Labor Day (May 1) with vigils and protest marches in various Moroccan cities, raising a number of demands, including protecting the purchasing power of the working class, increasing wages, and respecting freedoms.
In this context, the Democratic Confederation of Labor reported that Labor Day this year comes in the context of a rise in the unemployment rate, a deterioration in purchasing power, the growth of sectoral, sectarian and regional protests, a decline in the scope of freedoms, the spread of corruption, rent-seeking and monopoly, and the continuation of the series of expulsions and closure of institutions.
In its appeal, the Confederation called for widespread participation in the May 1st demonstrations, in order to demand the employment of the unemployed, provide decent work, impose respect for union freedoms and all obligations included in the April 30, 2022 agreement, and respond to the legitimate demands of the working class during this round of social dialogue.
The union body added that among the demands it raises are the general increase in wages in the public and private sectors, the unification of the minimum wage (SMIG) and (SMAG), a review of the income tax sections, and the creation of a new degree of promotion, in addition to the increase in retirees’ pensions, and the protection of union rights. And relieve tension through serious and responsible sectoral dialogue and responding to the just and legitimate demands of many sectors.
The Confederation stressed that this year’s protests also constitute an occasion to support the Palestinian struggle once morest the brutal Zionist occupation, build the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and confront all forms of normalization.
For its part, the Moroccan Labor Union revealed that May 1 is an occasion to protest once morest the conditions the working class is experiencing, especially in the current circumstance characterized by the outrageous high cost of living and the unprecedented deterioration of purchasing power.
In its May 1st appeal, the Union called on the government to “take immediate measures to improve the income of wage earners and change its approach to social dialogue, while accelerating the production of fair, equitable and inclusive basic systems for the benefit of the various groups that are still outside them, while condemning the ongoing violations of rights and freedoms.”
The union called for widespread participation in the massive marches it organizes in all cities and regions to express dissatisfaction and denounce the regressive policies that aim to undermine retirement benefits and the right to strike.
