Inclined Plane Closure: Safety Concerns and Investigations Underway

“Tray n°2 was immediately taken out of service in order to guarantee the safety of the inclined plane itself as well as the users of the structure”, indicated Sarah Pierre, spokesperson for the Public Service of Wallonia (SPW), specifying that the nature of the technical defect has not yet been determined and that further investigations are underway.

Tray No. 1 has been shut down since a door fell on June 9, caused by a broken cable. “The repair work on the damaged cable was launched at the same time as the maintenance work which was to benefit from tray no. 1 anyway,” said Sarah Pierre. “The maintenance and modernization of ferry No. 2 being completed, navigation was thus able to resume in mid-July”.

The defect detected on Tuesday at ferry n°2 therefore results in the total closure of navigation on the Inclined Plane for an as yet indefinite period. “All our teams are mobilized to carry out investigations and try to find a solution as quickly as possible. A diversion for boatmen has been set up via Mons Grand-Large and Tournai”, according to the spokesperson.
