Incident Leaves Victim Dead and Wife Injured: Welding Safety Precautions

A 63-year-old welder, who had suffered serious burns last Thursday, January 4, due to the explosion that occurred in his home, died in the followingnoon of last Tuesday.

On the day of the tragic event, the victim, identified as José Luis Oropeza, was carrying out welding work on the roof of his home located in the Unisol 2 urban development, La Chapa sector, José Félix Ribas municipality, in the eastern axis of the Aragua state, when a electric arc or spark from the machine he was driving fell on a container containing gasoline, which caused the explosion.

In less than a second the explosion occurred with serious consequences that José Luis suffered burns in various parts of his body.

His wife, Arlex de Oropeza, who was helping him at the time, also suffered 3rd degree burns.

Upon hearing the loud explosion, the neighbors came out of their homes to check what had happened, but found the bodies still alive on the floor.

They were immediately transferred to the José María Benítez Hospital in La Victoria. Due to the severity of the burns suffered, the doctors recommended his transfer to the emergency service of the Maracay Central Hospital (HCM).

The welder might not resist his injuries and died at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Subsequently, with the presence of the Cicpc of the Municipal Delegation of La Victoria, at around 5:50 in the followingnoon the body was transferred to the Forensic Medicine of Caña de Azúcar.

It was learned that Mrs. Arlex continues fighting to continue living, under the observation of the doctors at the Maracayero hospital.

Paramedics from La Victoria recommended taking precautions when carrying out this type of work inside a house, in order to avoid events like this.

They also urged people to avoid having nearby flammable liquid, solid or gas materials that are susceptible to burning easily when they come into contact with an ignition or heat source, with rapid flame spread, such as gasoline, kerosene and acetone.
