An acrobat in his 20s, who was performing a “wheel of death” act with his brother in England on Wednesday, had to be rushed to hospital following sliding more than 16 feet in the air.
“It seemed like a lack of timing. He went to jump through one of the wheels and slipped and landed on the ground. He was fully conscious following the fall and two members of the audience, an off-duty police officer and a paramedic, showed up to help him,” circus manager and master Jack Jay told the BBC on Thursday.
The young acrobat in his twenties was performing an act alongside his brother at the Hippodrome Circus, Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, on Wednesday when he reportedly fell nearly five meters through the air, in front of an audience of children and uncertain adults, according to images shared by the British media.
“At first I thought it was part of the show, so I continued filming. They often miss on purpose to annoy the public and make them nervous, but then we realized that something was wrong,” reported a witness to the scene, on condition of anonymity, sharing her images with the BBC.
The young man was rushed to hospital with “serious, life-changing injuries” but in stable condition, according to Norfolk police.
He is expected to escape with a broken shoulder, arm and leg, his manager said in a follow-up to the BBC.
After checking the equipment, no fault was found on the equipment or rigging of the act, which suggests that “human error” was behind the accident, he told the British media.
“We are delighted that the news is positive – given what happened – and that he is in a good state of recovery,” Jack Jay added.
