Faced with the challenge of the number of people with chronic-degenerative diseases, reinforcing prevention in the Health sector is essential. For this reason, the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (Issste) inaugurated the 3rd National ECOS Meeting for Well-being: “The ECOS of public health”, informed the general director, Pedro Zenteno Santaella.

Before more than two thousand attendees at the “Siglo XXI” Convention Center in Mérida, Yucatán; five thousand virtually; and with the presence of senators, federal and local deputies, the head of the institute highlighted the revolution of awareness regarding self-care, and said that it is essential to avoid suffering from hypertension, diabetes, obesity, among others.

“Because we are not born sick, we get sick as we change our lifestyle, mainly with our eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. For this reason, the importance of the ECOS program, whose main objective is to permanently implement primary health care (PHC) at all three levels.”

At ISSSTE and the Government of Mexico, health is a human right and not a commodity; We are promoting prevention as a form of public policy, because if this model had been chosen instead of cure in the 1970s, we would not have so many Mexicans with chronic-degenerative diseases, he said.

“In this task, we are all involved: doctors, nurses, administrative staff, operating colleagues. Everyone is making a great effort so that ISSSTE recovers that greatness and guideline that it was for many years, putting prevention at the center of the discussion.”

Today, with a progressive president like Andrés Manuel López Obrador, we are recovering the rectory of the Mexican State and public health policies, and an example of this is ECOS, because we are paying for a preventive culture, to have a healthier population, added the CEO.

The medical director of ISSSTE, Ramiro López Elizalde, explained that health is not only the absence of disease, but a complete state of psychosocial well-being, but for society to be healthy, the population must be involved.

In this sense, he pointed out: “APS is the teacher who not only teaches addition and subtraction, but also encourages children to stop sugary drinks and junk food; she is the housewife who would rather make an egg pancake than instant soup, the dog owner who picks up her pet’s feces; that is, people who carry out small actions for a healthier life”.

The Secretary of Health of Yucatan, Mauricio Sauri Vivas, representing the state governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal, highlighted the importance of the ECOS program and working together with all institutions for the benefit, not only of Yucatecans, but of all all the mexicans

During June 8 and 9, in person and online, medical, nursing and administrative staff from regional, general hospitals, clinics and first, second and third level care units, sub-delegates of the 35 representations of the institute nationwide , specialists, psychologists, social workers and nutritionists, exchanged experiences in the APS, through magisterial presentations.
