The president of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMEH), Reidy Zambrano, reported that the country is not suffering direct impacts from tropical storm Ernesto.

“When we talk about the direct effect of a tropical cyclone, it is said that it has a direct effect on a country when the eye of the hurricane passes through the national territory. In this sense, we do not have any type of direct impact,” he explained in an interview for Union Radio Tuesday, August 13th.

However, he noted that these cyclones tend to modify the wind flow, which interacts with the mountain ranges, thus tending to increase rainfall.

According to Zambrano, the affected regions of the country are the coastal mountain range that includes Sucre. It also extends to the central sector: Capital District, Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua and then towards the Andes mountain range.

The passage of tropical waves through Venezuela

Zambrano recalled that currently in Venezuela it is the season of rains in Venezuelawhich began in May.

“The tropical wave season began in May. We are estimating between 58 and 65 tropical waves, of which 30 have formed. Wave 29 has transformed into tropical storm Ernesto,” he said.

He also said that they are monitoring the passage of tropical waves through the country 24 hours a day. He also reiterated that they have a rain plan in place in the event of the passage of these tropical waves.

“The change in winds that causes the passage of these cyclones acts mainly with precipitation near the mountain range,” he added.
