Inadequate Regulations Leave Forest Rangers in Brussels Feeling Vulnerable: The Fight for Service Weapons

Anger from forest rangers in Brussels. For lack of a regulatory basis, they can no longer carry a weapon and they don’t like it at all. Without it, they feel “vulnerable” in the field and feel they can no longer do their job properly.

Etienne and Willy are forest rangers. Their missions: to manage the fauna and flora of the Soignes forest and to note the offenses committed in the forest. For legal reasons, they can no longer carry their service weapon since 2010, which would prevent them from fully performing their duties.

“Like this deer for which I was called by the police. I guided by the walker who had called the police. Without my service weapon, I had to put an end to his suffering with a lumbering tool . It was a barbaric act,” estime Willy.

Despite repeated protests from forest rangers, the Brussels region plans to permanently ban these service weapons.

On Tuesday, the 7 Brussels agents filed a complaint with the Securex social secretariat. “Simple verbal aggression is almost daily. Physical aggression is rather rare, but my colleague mentioned earlier that he was attacked by a walker. We notice that the public no longer recognizes our function”, says Etienne, another ranger.

For the Brussels Minister for the Environment, arming forest rangers is not desirable. “The image with the population might be damaged and generate mistrust or fear of the staff of the region”says Alain Maron.

For its part, Brussels Environment has not yet examined the complaint. A meeting with the rangers will be organized soon.
