As for the professional runners, it was the Ethiopian Uma Mulugueta who defied the odds and won the race in 2h05 and 33 seconds ahead of one of the big favorites of the day, the Kenyan Titus Kipruto. Among the women, another surprising Ethiopian won. Novice Mestawut Fikir won the marathon in 2h20 and 45 seconds at the finish ahead of her compatriot Enat Tirusew.
