Venezuelan Anyelin Venegas was one step away from reaching the podium at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday, after finishing fourth in her division in the recent day of the weightlifting tournament in which her compatriot Julio Mayora was unable to stand out and win a medal, as he did in Tokyo 2020.

The competition took place at the Paris Sur Arena, where Venegas competed in the 59 kilogram (kg) category of the women’s branch and achieved her position after lifting 102 kilos in the snatch and another 128 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 230 kg.

Although she did not win a circle, the 25-year-old did win an Olympic diploma, the fifth for the Venezuelan delegation in a major world competition in which it has not yet won any medals.

Previously, the men’s epee team (made up of Rubén, Francisco and Jesús Limardo, as well as Grabiel Lugo) received recognition in fencing, Raiber Rodríguez obtained one in Greco-Roman wrestling for men, Rosa Rodríguez earned one in athletics after participating in the hammer throw and Yohandri Granado earned one in tae kwon do.

Winner of the ladies’ joust

In the women’s event, China’s Shifang Luo won, lifting 107 kg in the snatch, 134 in the clean and jerk and totalling 241 kg. All these figures represented new Olympic records, which gave even more value to her conquest of the golden circle.

The silver medal went to Canadian Maude Charron, who lifted 106 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with 236 kg.

The bronze medal went to Taiwanese Hsing-Chun Kuo, who lifted 105 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a mark of 235 kg.

Mayora did not stand out

In the men’s 73kg competition, Mayora – Olympic runner-up in Tokyo 2020 – did not stand out because he did not complete any valid clean and jerk attempts.

After lifting 152kg in the snatch, the 27-year-old native unsuccessfully tried to lift 188kg, 188kg and 192kg on three occasions and was disqualified.

The winner of the yellow prize was Indonesian Rizki Juniansyah, who totalled 354 kilos, broken down into 155 kg in the snatch and 199 kg in the clean and jerk (a new record for this type of global meeting).

The silver medal went to Thailand’s Weeraphon Wichuma with a total of 346 kg. In the snatch he lifted 148 kg and in the clean and jerk 198 kg.

Bozhidaar Andreev completed the list of honours, after gaining 154 kg in the snatch, which added to 190 kg in the clean and jerk allowed him to finish with 344 kg.
