A farmer is the new victim of antipersonnel mines in Antioquia. The man was working when he stepped on one of these improvised explosive devices that would have been installed by the ELN guerrilla in one of the crops in the Arenales village of the municipality of Segovia.
The community, after the incident, contacted soldiers from the 14th Brigade of the National Army who, despite the difficult security situation in the area, went there to attend to the emergency.
Lying in an improvised hammock and losing a lot of blood, the farmer received primary care from the combat nurse. After stabilizing him, the military contacted the Colombian Air Force, which prepared an operation to rescue the injured man.
In turn, the troops cordoned off the area to prevent surprise attacks by armed law enforcement groups that have interference in the rural area of Segovia.
The Air Force pilots, after receiving instructions from the soldiers, landed in the surroundings of the village where, in a quick action and carried by the military themselves, they evacuated the farmer to a care center in the municipality of Rionegro, where in this moment he recovers.

### Interview with Community Leader Maria Gonzalez on Recent Mining Incident in Segovia
**Editor**: Today we’re speaking with Maria Gonzalez, a community leader from Segovia, Antioquia, to discuss a recent tragic incident involving a farmer who fell victim to an antipersonnel mine. Thank you for joining us, Maria.
**Maria Gonzalez**: Thank you for having me.
**Editor**: Can you provide us with details about the incident that occurred with the farmer in Arenales village?
**Maria Gonzalez**: Absolutely. This incident occurred while the farmer was working in his fields. He accidentally stepped on an antipersonnel mine that, as we understand, was likely installed by the ELN guerrilla group. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers facing our rural communities.
**Editor**: What immediate actions were taken after the incident?
**Maria Gonzalez**: The community acted quickly by contacting the soldiers from the 14th Brigade of the National Army. They bravely navigated a challenging security situation to reach the farmer, who was gravely injured. A combat nurse provided critical care on-site, which was vital for stabilizing his condition before he was airlifted to a hospital in Rionegro.
**Editor**: How has the local community reacted to this event?
**Maria Gonzalez**: There’s a mix of fear and anger. People are worried about the ongoing threat of mines in our fields, which are vital for our livelihoods. There’s also anger towards those who would lay these traps in areas where families work and live. This incident has reignited calls for greater protection and support from the government.
**Editor**: What measures do you think should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future?
**Maria Gonzalez**: We urgently need better mine clearance operations in our area and comprehensive education about the risks associated with living and working in these rural regions. The community also needs more support from the government to ensure safety and security from armed groups.
**Editor**: Thank you, Maria, for sharing your insights and concerns. It’s a tragic situation, and we hope for a swift recovery for the injured farmer and safety for the community.
**Maria Gonzalez**: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. It’s crucial that we keep the conversation going.
