Trisomy 21, also called Down syndrome, is a chromosomal abnormality. It is the first cause of mental deficit of genetic origin. How do you live with your disability when you have trisomy 21? Our journalist met Anne-France, 35, who shares with us the impact of trisomy 21 on her daily life. The article below is largely the transcript of the associated video interview.
What difficulties do you face on a daily basis?
I understood that I was different from my brothers and sisters and I accepted. Down syndrome is being different from others. But it also gives a different point of view. I work, I have a home, with my fiancé by the way.
It can slow down daily life, because we understand differently. That depends on the people. But for me, when it’s going too fast, for example giving change quickly, for me, it’s difficult. I have a bank card. I only depend on me, I am an adult like everyone else, but different. So I manage my accounts. When it’s big numbers, I have trouble, so I ask my parents for help. I have to watch my expenses. But otherwise I’m doing fine.
What does your daily life look like?
I dreamed of being a waitress. My mother was looking all over the internet. She saw that they had created Happy Cafés, different from the others. Everyone is different, everyone is as they are. It’s not just trisomy 21, there are also other disabilities. We can serve, it gives us the opportunity to speak with people from outside, the tourists who come, we can simply speak with them.
What message is close to your heart?
You have to communicate. Speech is very important. The people followingwards understand how we feel. And there they can help us. For me it’s not hard to accept my trisomy 21. I accept. Some find it hard to accept. But it depends on the people. I’m happy to talk regarding it. For me it is important.
If you see people different from others, you can talk to them and it will open your mind.
