As reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, “for the first time in history” a digital personality has been introduced, which will officially comment to the media.
It is stated that the representative created with the help of artificial intelligence will provide news regarding consular affairs. The topic is currently controversial in Ukraine, as last week Ukraine suspended consular services for men of conscription age living abroad. For this reason, they must return to their country where they can be drafted into the army.
The representative, dressed in a dark suit, introduced herself as Victoria Shi, a “digital personality”, in a presentation posted on social media. While speaking, this figure gestures with its hands and moves its head, according to the Guardian.
The Foreign Ministry’s press office said Shi’s statements would not be prepared by artificial intelligence but “written and verified by real people.”
“Artificial intelligence helps us generate only the visual part,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said, adding that the new spokeswoman is “a technological leap that no diplomatic service in the world has ever made.”
According to him, the main reason for its creation is “to save diplomats’ time and resources”. The creators of V.Shi are the Game Changers team, which has already created virtual reality content related to the war in Ukraine.
According to the Guardian, Victorios Shi’s name is a combination of the word “victory” and the Ukrainian phrase for artificial intelligence: shtuchniy intelekt.
Victoria’s look and voice are modeled following a real person: Rosalie Nombre, a singer and former contestant on the Ukrainian reality show The Bachelor. R. Nombre was born in the now Russian-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Her Instagram account is followed by 54 thousand people. followers who discuss stereotypes regarding mixed-race Ukrainians and those who grew up Russian-speaking.
The ministry stressed that Shi and Nombre “are two different people” and that only the AI character would make official statements.
To prevent forgeries, a QR code will be attached to the statements, which will link to the text versions on the ministry’s website.
