Ukraine’s Annual Time Warp: Fall Back into Confusion!
So, just when you thought you could escape the time-traveling antics of daylight savings, here comes Ukraine sliding in with its annual switcheroo! On October 27th, the clock hands will be forced back by an hour at 4 AM — or, as we like to call it, the “one more hour of sleep… but why am I still awake?” special!
A Shift in Time: What’s the Fuss?
Every last Sunday of October, nations around the world engage in this ritual of insanity known as “falling back.” But there’s a looming question on everyone’s lips: why aren’t we just canceling this nonsense? Well, according to our friends in the Verkhovna Rada, a law was passed in July 2024 to abolish the dreaded time change once and for all. But get this—it’s only meant to happen after one final fling with daylight saving in March 2025. A dramatic farewell, you might say, like the end of a soap opera: “Will they? Won’t they?!”
Now you might think modern technology would save us from the clutches of confusing time changes. After all, most devices update themselves, automatically adjusting to this hour of madness. But don’t get too smug if you’re sporting a lovely old mechanical watch—it’ll still be counting the minutes in a more retro fashion, like your uncle at a wedding trying to recall the last time he did the Macarena.
The Debate: Time Does Tell, or Maybe Not?
Here’s where the story gets a bit more tangled than a pair of earbuds in your pocket. While the Rada is all about banning the clock change due to potential “negative health consequences” — like cardiovascular diseases that sneak up on you like that urgent task you forgot to do — not everyone is on board with the ban. The “Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Ukraine” piped up, claiming there’s no definitive study from the global scientific community declaring that adjusting clocks will turn me into a walking zombie.
In their defense, who needs more scientific backing when we’ve all graphically experienced the loss of one hour’s sleep like a tragic plot twist? Really, trying to adapt is like turning up to your mate’s dinner party 30 minutes late—you’re still going to miss out on the good stuff while everyone’s already polishing off dessert.
A Presidential Dilemma: To Sign or Not to Sign
And now we find ourselves at the doorstep of destiny, waiting for President Volodymyr Zelensky to make that grand signature. Well, it seems he’s opted out of the time travel debate altogether, likely wary of the billions of economic losses that could ensue from taking 60 minutes away from productivity. Because remember, folks—while we’re over here trying to figure out what time it really is, someone’s still got to be counting dollars!
So, gear up, Ukraine! Get ready for your one last glorious leap into winter time chaos, where sleep is a luxury, confusion reigns supreme, and experts debate while the clocks tick away. This time next year, we might just be laughing, or crying, through the pure absurdity of it all.
Stay tuned for more hilarity (or sanity)—whichever comes first!
On the night of October 27, Ukraine switches to winter time. Exactly at 04:00 the clock hand will go back an hour – you will be able to sleep one hour longer.
Let us remind you that the change of clocks from summer to winter time occurs on the last Sunday of October – in 2024 this day falls on the 27th.
Modern watches, smartphones, laptops and other devices change time automatically, but you should not forget about mechanical watches.
Why wasn’t the clock change canceled?
Back in July 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law abolishing the change of clocks. After the president signed this document, the clock was supposed to change to daylight saving time for the last time. And at the end of March 2025 and beyond, clocks would no longer change to daylight saving time.
The deputies argued their decision by saying that changing the clocks has a number of negative consequences, which entails a significant deterioration in the health of citizens during the adaptation period.
A 2021 report by EU parliamentarians in favor of eliminating clock changes noted that scientific research has linked time changes to diseases of the cardiovascular or immune systems. The document also contained arguments that changing clocks does not contribute to energy saving.
However, there were also opposing opinions. In particular, the public organization “Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Ukraine” disputed these arguments and called for the law to be vetoed. They said that now there are no “authoritative studies recognized by the world scientific community” indicating a serious negative impact of the seasonal clock change on the physiological and psychological state of a person. But reducing energy costs for lighting remains relevant.
This bill was sent to President Vladimir Zelensky for signature in August, but he has not yet signed it. And, as BBC News Ukraine claims, citing its own sources in the president’s team, he is not going to do this. They say that during the discussion of this law, experts “calculated and saw the disadvantages for the economy – losses amounted to several billion.”
