In two years, Itaipu invested US$ 43.8 million in favor of the country’s public health

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Since the Government took office, Itaipu Binacional has focused its social investment on supporting programs aimed at strengthening the country’s public health, thus allocating 43,815,730 dollars (304,650,772,213 guaraníes) to improve the health system, infrastructure, equipment and supplies in this sector.

All actions undertaken by the National Government in terms of support for public health, through Itaipu, during the first two years, aim to strengthen the national health system for the benefit of more than seven million Paraguayans.

Investments in these areas have intensified since the beginning of the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; since March of this year, support has been given to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (Mspybs) with much greater emphasis.

US$ 17,626,543 investment to combat the pandemic

For the fight against Covid-19, Itaipu has allocated an amount of 17,626,543 dollars (117,085,710,054 guaraníes), of which 3 million dollars have been approved for the execution of a contingency plan at the request of the Ministry of Health and which allowed the acquisition of reagents and medical supplies. Also, at the request of said institution, 4,749,597 dollars were invested for the provision of highly complex equipment to specialized and reference hospitals nationwide.

Other contributions include personal protective medical equipment and the provision of supplies and medicines, which were considered of absolute priority by the Ministry of Health. In this regard, investments worth 1,431,926 dollars and 3,745,021 dollars were made, respectively, within the framework of projects to support emergency actions and acquisitions for the health system.

An investment of 4,700,000 dollars was made for humanitarian aid in quarantine shelters and the distribution of food in Alto Paraná, both for the operation of soup kitchens and for indigenous families and communities in 15 districts. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Binational has distributed a total of 2,593,500 kilos of food.

Construction of 66 USF

Among the main actions undertaken by Itaipu on the Paraguayan side in favor of public health, there is also the construction of 66 new Family Health Units (FHU) for a value of 113,075 million guaraníes. The FHUs are distributed in four departments of the country: 25 in Central, 23 in Alto Paraná, 12 in Concepción and 6 in San Pedro.

Revitalization of district hospitals

Likewise, the hospitals (regional and district) of Ciudad del Este (work completed and delivered), Hernandarias, Presidente Franco, Minga Guazú (works about to be inaugurated), Pedro Juan Caballero and Concepción (works completed) have been equipped and modernized, for a total amount of 20,619 million guaraníes.

Drinking Water and Sanitation System

Regarding investments in Water Supply Systems, 28.532 billion guaraníes have been allocated to the construction of 66 artesian wells, the installation of tanks and drinking water distribution networks.

Attention to people with disabilities

The Entity has also invested 25.337 million guaraníes to carry out programs aimed at the care and rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and assistance to women and children in vulnerable situations.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, Itaipu Binacional and its employees have implemented strict measures to ensure the supply of electricity in the midst of a health emergency, considering that the hydroelectric plant meets more than 85% of Paraguay’s electricity demand. Likewise, the Entity will continue all projects that contribute to optimizing health services and fighting this pandemic that is ravaging the entire world.
