in the wrong direction on the highway, an 80-year-old driver hits a family, two dead and three injured

The facts took place around 3 a.m. in the night from Saturday to Sunday, on the A7, south of Vienna, in the Marseille-Lyon direction, near Auberives-sur-Varèze, specifies France Bleu Isère. An 80-year-old man, who was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway, collided with another vehicle carrying a family.

The collision left two dead – the 80-year-old driver and another 40-year-old man – and three seriously injured, including a 12-year-old girl, said the Dauphiné, which added that the pensioner killed was driving a Mitsubishi ASX. The family was in a Citroën C3 Aircross.

Traffic on the A7 was cut in both directions for nearly two hours, the time of the intervention of the emergency services which called in the helicopter of the civil security.

In the wake of this accident, and while a two-kilometre traffic jam had formed upstream, a car hit five other vehicles located behind the traffic jam, fortunately without causing any casualties.

The fatal collision occurred during a big weekend of holiday departures for the French. This Saturday the day was red at the national level. A peak of nearly 800 km of cumulative traffic jams was recorded on the country’s main roads used by holidaymakers, in particular on the A7.
