In the wireless headphones market, Apple’s AirPods crush the competition

Think back to 2016 when everyone laughed at the design of Apple’s first AirPods. Today, everyone seems to have turned around and is enjoying the sound quality of the Apple brand’s wireless headphones. Indeed, in this market, Apple is the undisputed leader and it is hard to see who might challenge this hegemony.

That’s what it comes out of a new study by Statista: Apple is the world number one in the market for wireless headphones, and not just a little. The Cuppertino company truly crushes the competition. To carry out this study, Statista questioned no less than 4,220 Americans to find out which headphones or earphones they use.

And the results of these interrogations are clear: the AirPods are far ahead of their competitors. Indeed, 34.4% of respondents said they use AirPods. And in addition, in second place in the ranking, we find Beats headphones (15.3% of responses) which also belong to Apple. In other words, the Cuppertino firm largely dominates this market. It’s simple: almost 50% of survey respondents indicated that they use Apple-owned devices. In third and fourth place are Bose (12.5%) and Samsung (12.2%).

Five years later, it’s clear that Apple has the final say once more, as the AirPods, now in their third generation, are probably the most popular headphones on the planet. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives estimates that AirPods have become a $20 billion annual business and are on track to sell 100 million units this year.

The AirPods Pro 2 are coming

And this hegemony is likely to persist over time. After the release of Third-generation AirPods in 2021the AirPods Pro 2 should land on the market in the course of 2022 with a lot of new features. The sound quality will be better while the headphones will lose their stem, a source of mockery when the very first model of AirPods was presented in 2016. It is also possible that these new headphones will be equipped an authentication system to ensure user privacy security.
