“In the West, nothing new” by Edward Berger crowned best film

In the west, nothing is new, which tells the story of a young German soldier during the First World War, won, on the evening of Sunday February 19, the prize for best film at the Bafta, the British film awards. The film, produced by Netflix and directed by German Edward Berger, 53, won ahead of The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once et Warehouse.

This adaptation of the famous 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque – one of the most influential works of anti-militarist literature – equals Tiger and Dragon (directed by Ang Lee and released in 2000) for the number of nominations for a film made in a language other than English. The film is also multi-nominated for the Oscars next month.

Edward Berger also won Best Director for In the west, nothing is new. Nominated in fourteen categories in total, the feature film dominates the nominations of this 76e Bafta ceremony, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Prize for best documentary awarded to “Navalny”

American Austin Butler won the best actor award for his role in the biopic Elvis on the rock’n roll legend. The 31-year-old comedian won ahead of Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Daryl McCormack, Paul Mescal and Bill Nighy.

Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her role in Warehouse. The Australian-American embodies a brilliant conductor, a monster of intelligence and self-control, caught in the vertigo of power. The 53-year-old actress won the award ahead of Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler, Ana De Armas, Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh.

The prize for best documentary went to Navalnydevoted to the Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny, once morest a backdrop of controversy, following the boss of the investigative site Bellingcat, Christo Grozev, was prevented from attending the ceremony for security reasons. London police cited the risk of“hostile intentions of foreign states”.

The Bafta ceremony, like that of the Golden Globes, gives a taste of the Oscars, which will be awarded on March 12 in Los Angeles.
