A trend of what has come to be baptized as the “great resignation” continues, a phenomenon by which millions of people are leaving their jobs, something facilitated by the large number of job offers available.
The US economy continues to suffer from a lack of workerswith a difference between jobs offered and available labor of almost 5.5 million in April, but the number of job offers has begun to fall.
The phenomenon, dubbed “big resignation”is because millions of people are leaving their jobs due to the large number of job offers available, privileging places with better salaries, also those with teleworking or hybrid system.
According to data published this Wednesday by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, on the last working day of April there were in the country 11.4 million jobs offeredsignificantly above the nearly 6 million people estimated to be looking for work at the time.
The difference between the almost 6 million workers looking for work and the 11.4 million available positions shows an imbalance of nearly 5.5 million jobs with no one to fill them, one of the highest figures recorded in recent years.
Although this difference is maintained, the jobs offered fell in April compared to March by 455,000, that is, at the end of April there were almost half a million job offers less than at the end of March.
Reducing the rate of job creation is one of the objectives that both the US government and the Federal Reserve -the US central bank- have set for themselves. to curb wage increases in companies and thus help alleviate high inflation.
During April there were 6.6 million hires in the US and 6 million people stopped working for their companies without counting retirements (in both cases, figures very similar to those of March).
Among the 6 million who stopped working for their companies, more than two-thirds (4.4 million) voluntarily resigned from employment, either to go to work in another company, to start their own projects or to take a break.
This maintains the trend of what has come to be baptized as the “great resignation”, a phenomenon that began last year in which millions of people are leaving their jobs, something facilitated by the large number of job offers available.
The labor shortage and the “great resignation” have increased the bargaining power of workers with their companieswhich compete with other companies to retain and attract new employees, for which they are offering salary increases and other benefits.
