THE public is currently shocked by the Algerian boxer, Imane Khelif at the 2024 Paris Olympics who is facing the Italian boxer, Angela Carini.

A video circulating on social media shows the match between Khelif and Carini which ended in 46 seconds on Thursday (1/8).

The public was shocked by Carini’s decision to end the match so early. Also, shocked by Khelif’s appearance which was considered more like a man.

Quoting the official website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Khelif is registered as a female boxer born on May 2, 1999, who defends her country, Algeria.

Khelif has participated in the Olympics twice, namely at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Olympics. He was also appointed as UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador for Algeria (2024-25) and received an award as the best Algerian athlete (2021-2022).

Khelif started boxing after watching the games at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Despite having to travel 10 kilometers by bus from his small village to the boxing gym, he fell in love with the sport on his first day of training. To pay for the bus fare, he sold scrap metal for recycling and his mother helped out by selling couscous.

Khelif had reached the quarter-finals in the lightweight (60kg) division at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but lost 0-5 to defending champion Kellie Harrington (Ireland).

In addition, she won the silver medal in the light welterweight (63kg) class at the 2022 World Championships and became the first Algerian female boxer to win a world championship medal. In the final, she lost by unanimous decision to Amy Broadhurst (IRL).

Khelif also won the light welterweight (63 kg) gold medal at the 2022 African Championships, defeating Aratwa Kasemang (Botswana) in the final.

Khelif also won the light welterweight (63 kg) gold medal at the 2022 Mediterranean Games, defeating Assunta Canfora (Italy) 3-0 in the final. He then won the 66 kg gold medal at the 2023 Arab Games, defeating Belahbib Oumayma (Morocco) in the final. (Z-6)
