In the presence of the head of the Film Commission, specialists discuss prospects for cooperation between cinema and sports

The Saudi Film Authority, in partnership with the film site “Sollywood”, held a workshop under the title “Cinema and Sports”, this evening, Tuesday, June 13; With the participation of a group of interested and specialists in the film industry, and in the presence of the CEO of the Film Commission, Eng. Abdullah Al Ayyaf, the workshop was presented by the Saudi producer and director, “Abdullah Orabi”.

Al Ayyaf expressed his happiness with the interaction of filmmakers in the attendance workshops held by the commission in partnership with Solywood, asking the attendees to share with him their proposals, aspirations, and views on the work of the commission, the workshops and the topics they prefer to discuss and the ways for them in the future.

In his speech to the participants in the workshop, Al Ayyaf stressed the importance of devoting himself to filmmakers to present creative works of high quality. Therefore, the Commission and other agencies in the Kingdom seek to provide support for full-time filmmakers.

In response to a question regarding production support agencies in the Kingdom, the CEO of the Film Authority confirmed that there are many supportive agencies, including: The Red Sea International Film Festival Fund and the Saudi Film Festival, in addition to the Film Authority, which has more than one support program, such as the Light Program to support Films, the financial recovery program, and many other parties, advising filmmakers to provide a complete scenario for work before going to the supporting parties, and responding to requests for funds, support providers, and financial incentives, because the more information available, the more decisive factor in providing support.

Al Ayyaf referred to the financial recovery program, whereby producers and filmmakers can recover 40% of the amounts paid in production if Saudi cadres are employed in cinematic works, which contributes to the localization of the industry.



Al Ayyaf thanked “Sollywood” and the filmmakers participating in the workshops. Adding: I was keen to listen to the interventions of the attendees, so that the authority would not be isolated from workers in the industry and their concerns, stressing that the coming period will witness repercussions on the ground.

The workshop, which was held in Riyadh, included two discussion sessions. The first was titled “Sport in Cinema and its Impact on the Audience”, and its work began with a discussion of the human relationship with sports represented in: competition, challenge, entertainment and success, as well as strengthening the body. Then the discussion moved during the first session of the workshop, to review the phases of sports throughout history throughout the various civilizations, including: Islamic, Greek and Roman civilizations, until the modern era. During the session, examples of sports in cinema throughout history were shown, among them: the movie “Rocky”, which was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 3 of them, and the movie “Raging Bull”, which was nominated for 7 Oscars, and won two of them.

During the first session, samples of dramatic sports documentaries were shown, including: “Formula 1” and “Divin Codino”. The session also witnessed the presentation of models of sports in anime, and their impact on Japanese society, among them: “Kuroko’s Basket”. Finally, he presented examples of local works, including: “The Blue Spirit” and “Heroes”. The first session concluded its work by clarifying the role of sports in films as a means of spreading values ​​and principles, by rejecting intolerance, developing teamwork and team spirit, and emphasizing that talent alone is not enough, in addition to its role in enhancing self-confidence.

The second session of the workshop was held; Entitled “Cooperation between the Film Industry and Sports”, it discussed 4 aspects of cooperation between the cinema and sports industries, namely: the integration of athletes into the film industry, the impact of sports fame on the marketing and success of films, in addition to the role of cinema technology in broadcasting sporting events, and future aspirations for cooperation between the film industry. Cinema and sports, with examples of them presented, including: “The Asian Cup”, “The Descent of Al-Ahly”, and “The Retired Players”. The second session included a presentation of examples of the integration of athletes into the film industry. The workshop ended its activities by organizing a group improvisation exercise for the participants.

In conclusion, the workshop came out with a number of recommendations, most notably: the necessity of investing in local sports stories, cooperating with sports entities to transform the stories of champions into cinematic content, benefiting from sports stars to serve cinematic business in marketing, in addition to opening up to successful global experiences.

This workshop comes as an extension of the partnership between the Film Authority and the film site “Sollywood”, to contribute to building and strengthening the relationship with the film community, and to address the concerns of professionals and workers in the industry, in addition to identifying the most prominent challenges they face, introducing new opportunities in the sector and providing those interested and specialized in them. .

The Film Authority continues its efforts to create the appropriate conditions to make a qualitative leap in the film sector locally, to consolidate the Saudi film industry, and to promote local content to achieve international standards.
