In the Major Leagues they see it as possible for the New York Yankees to play in Mexico

Now that the Major leagues have announced their return to Mexico and for the first time in history they will hold regular season games in the country’s capital, with the duels that the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres will hold on April 29 and 30, 2023 at the Alfredo Harp Helú stadium, appears the question: How likely is it that the New York Yankees?

Rodrigo Fernández, director of the Major Leagues office for Latin America, assures that “of course it is possible.” “Obviously every major league team wants to come to Mexico. It has always been a priority for us to bring highly competitive teams,” adds the manager, in an exclusive interview with EL UNIVERSAL Deportes. “Every time they come, one goes to the World Series that same year or the next, which speaks that we make an important effort to bring in competitive teams”.

Fernández is aware of the popularity of the “Bronx Bombers” in Mexico, so they are an option for the future. “It’s something that’s been talked regarding, but probably those who go to the Yankees would also like to see (Julio) Urías with the Dodgers“, he stresses. “We are very clear regarding what people want.”

Because there is no doubt that those two teams are the most popular in Mexico. “Until two years ago, it was the Yankees (the Major League team with the most followers in Mexico),” admits Fernandez. “The Urías effect has been very important and today the Dodgers are ahead of the Yankees… It is very even between these two, and then there is already an important space with the second group, where the Astros, the Cubs, the Red Sox are, but There are also teams like the Blue Jays, who have a good number of fans.”

So it would not be unusual for one to be scheduled for the following years. The current contract of the “Big Show” with Mexico is until 2026, although that does not mean that every year it will be played in Mexico City. “This year and probably the one that follows, (it will be played) in Mexico City,” the manager clarifies. “Then, we are open to returning to Monterrey, because they are the two cities in which we see it possible to have regular season games in these four years.”

That will start with the series of two games between the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padreson April 29 and 30, 2023.
