114 Malayalam movies hit theaters in Kochi in six months. Out of this, only 4 have made show success and financial gain. After this year’s debut hit ‘Romancha’ and ‘2018’, newcomer director Steffi Xavier’s ‘Madhura Manohara Moham’ and Sudhi Maddison’s ‘Naymar’ entered the hit charts. Theater owners are at least slightly relieved by foreign language films. Sean Thriller John Wick Chapter 4 and Mission Impossible made gains. Compared to previous years, there was a huge increase in the number of Malayalam films during this period. 25 films were released in March alone. Nine films were released on a single day (February 24). Among the 73 Malayalam films released in the first three months, only ‘Romancham’ was a relief. Mammootty-starrer Nanpakal Nereth Mayakkum, Christopher and Mohanlal’s Elon flopped, but Nanapjan Nereth Mayakkum was critically acclaimed, followed by Manju Warrier starrer Ayesha, Vellaripattanam, Kunchacko Boban’s Pakalum Pathiraoum, Asifali’s Mahesh and Maruthi, Biju Menon’s Thangam, Bhavana’s Ntikakkakuru Premandarnni and Suraj Venjaramoot’s Hig. Vita also tasted failure. Nivin Pauly’s Port did not survive in the theatres, but gained attention. Flowering season, B 32 to 44 also excelled. During the period from April to June, only 2018 and Madura Manohara Moha, which hit the theaters in May, were greenlit. Fahadh Faasil’s Patch and Miracle Lamp, Dhoom, Shane Nigam’s Corona Papers, Shine Tom Chacko’s Adi, Suraj Venjaramood’s Madanotsavam, Urvashi’s Charles Enterprises, Indran’s Within Seconds and Rajisha Vijayan’s ‘Java’ have failed. Tovino Thomas’s ‘Blue Light’ is artistic but no money. It is also noteworthy that the hate film ‘Kerala Story’ did not create any movement in Kerala. Read on deshabhimani.com
