Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has blamed external forces for the current political crisis in his country, amid expectations that Parliament will vote to withdraw confidence in him on Sunday.
Khan, according to Pakistan’s Geo News channel, called on young people in his country to demonstrate today and tomorrow “for a peaceful and prosperous Pakistan,” stressing that there was evidence of a “shameless plot” once morest his government.
This comes at a time when Khan’s government lost the majority in the “National Assembly” (Parliament), as a result of the defection of a number of parties from the ruling coalition, the last of which was the “United National Movement”, which announced last Wednesday that seven representatives of it would join the opposition in the expected vote.
Khan warned that there is “no future” for Pakistan if the situation continues to develop in this direction, noting that peaceful demonstration is a legitimate right of the citizens. The Prime Minister accused their opponents of “selling out their conscience,” adding that he “wanted history to remember those traitors who conspire with outside powers.”
He claimed that external forces provide support to the opposition, especially by financing media campaigns, stressing that they are aware of plans to overthrow him in order for opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif to come to power. Khan expressed his conviction that his opponents will remain “slaves to external forces because of their corruption,” adding: “I will determine the course of legal action to take steps once morest them by tonight.” The Prime Minister stressed that he had a “plan” regarding the expected vote to withdraw confidence from him in the National Assembly, expressing his conviction in his ability to thwart this movement directed once morest him.
Khan had held the United States responsible for involvement in the alleged “foreign plot” aimed at removing him from power, and Washington denied the validity of these accusations.
