In the exhibition of the sculptor Mindaugas Navakas – works from hard porcelain | Culture

Author’s works, 20th century. Dec. 8-9 having significantly contributed to the renewal of the expression of sculpture and the formation of the Lithuanian contemporary art field, encouraging new interpretations, they remain an important component of contemporary culture to this day. M.Navak’s sculptural objects are exhibited in public spaces, more than one work has become an important part of the spaces of Lithuanian and foreign cities.

M.Navak’s personal exhibition “Carp and dragon” presents the latest works of living classics made of hard porcelain. The sculptural objects reveal materiality decisions important to the author and related socio-cultural issues. The artist creates structures reminiscent of Western forms from hard porcelain, which has a long tradition of Eastern ceramics, thus highlighting the conflicts of civilizations, cultural and aesthetic differences in his works.

Porcelain, which is associated with fragility and sophistication, in the sculptures of M. Navak, who does not shy away from irony, is contrasted with the use of this material in the everyday environment of the Western world. While researching philosophy and creating a conversation between two poles – east and west, sky and earth, culture and nature – the artist rethinks their relationship and mutual influences, notices the associated threats.

Unexpected sculptural decisions in the works create tensions, which reveal the feelings of uncertainty, danger, and the transience of traditions experienced today. M.Navak’s exhibition “Carp and Dragon” engages the viewer and encourages them to notice the identity differences between Eastern and Western cultures.
