In the construction industry, this parachute drone prototype could save lives in the event of a fall

In France, falls from height represent the second cause of work accidents, behind road accidents. In Italy, where 130 deaths are recorded each year, the National Institute of Insurance once morest Work Accidents (INAIL) and the Italian Institute of Technology have decided to tackle this scourge. Their solution: a portable drone acting as a parachute, designed primarily for construction professionals.

Still at the prototype stage, the project consists of a drone, housed in a large backpack, carried by the workers. Among the applications envisaged, Inail thus imagined the case of a worker perched on top of a wind turbine, who would fall. Where we might have imagined, in a more traditional way, the use of a parachute, the organization specializing in health chose to work on a device which would not only be able to retain the worker, but also to drop it off at a specific location. Called FSD-01, for Fall Safety Device, the drone would emerge autonomously from the bag, deploying in one second.

In the event of a fall from a height of more than 10 meters, the drone would mitigate the worker’s fall during his descent, up to a maximum speed of 5 meters per second. A harness and thigh loop should make it easier to carry the equipment. However, work must still be undertaken on the weight of the equipment, taking into account the presence of a battery. Currently, the weight of the prototype stands at 5 kg.

Airbags and virtual reality also on the program

The Fall Safety Device is just one of the building blocks of a more global program led by Inail to prevent falls from height. Exoskeletons and airbags are also among the avenues of research, as is the development of worker training using virtual reality. A way to anticipate potential risks linked to working conditions.

In Italy, falls from baskets, scaffolding, or inside roofs are among the most frequently identified risks in this area. Inail has not yet communicated details regarding the potential industrialization of the various equipment.
