“In der Weihnachtsbäckerei” is today one of the most popular children’s Christmas carols in Germany, but also in Austria. The work was composed by the Hamburg children’s songwriter Rolf Zuckowski – on the Autobahn. “I wrote the song on a car ride from Bochum to Hamburg when I heard on the car phone that the family was baking,” said the 75-year-old in a newspaper interview: “When I got home, the cookies were ready and the song also.”
He then sang it in the kitchen and everyone sang along. “It was clear to me then that the song would be well received. But I had no idea that it would reach the dimension of a folk song.” He owes it to his mother that he found music at all. She always loved to sing. “Without her input, I probably wouldn’t have become the composing singer I am today.”
