Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accepted the resignation of Cricket Committee Chairman Iqbal Qasim. We will issue a press release that the replacement will be announced soon.
According to a statement issued by the PCB, “Iqbal Qasim sent his resignation on September 3 and said that he is a dummy chairman who cannot even recommend a deserving match referee.”
Iqbal Qasim had said that ‘It is sad to see the injustice done to cricketers who meet the eligibility criteria to play cricket.
The PCB said in its statement that it is truly regrettable that an eminent and experienced cricketer of the caliber of Iqbal Qasim is voluntarily stepping down from his post.
“His service to cricket as a player and as an administrative head has been outstanding, the PCB respects his decision and wishes him all the best for the future,” the statement said.
Expressing disappointment over the decision, the board said, “PCB is disappointed that the Chairman of the Cricket Committee is resigning instead of respecting merit and the decision of an independent panel for not implementing his proposal.”
It was further stated that it is painful for the PCB to understand that when Iqbal Qasim took over as the Chairman of the Cricket Committee on January 31, 2020, the new PCB Constitution 2019 was in force at that time.
The PCB said that ‘the role of departmental teams had already ceased under the constitution which came into effect on 19 August 2019’.
According to the statement, Iqbal Qasim “when he assumed the post, he knew that there is no room for departmental teams under the new system and structure under which the new administration is doing its work”.
The board said that ‘PCB hoped that Iqbal Qasim would abide by its constitution while joining a corporate body’.
PCB said that ‘Iqbal Qasim is a loyal servant of Pakistan cricket and it is hoped that he will continue to provide his services in the future as well’.
It should be noted that the Cricket Committee of PCB is an advisory body like the committees of ICC and other boards of the world which advises the chairman of the board on matters related to cricket.
The function of the PCB Cricket Committee is to advise the Chairman PCB on the national cricket team, performance of its management, structure of domestic cricket, high performance centers and suitable playing conditions.
According to the board, the cricket committee has the authority to call the concerned persons in its meeting on quarterly basis to review their performance.
It may be recalled that PCB appointed Iqbal Qasim as the chairman of the cricket committee on February 6, 2020, while other members include former captain Wasim Akram, chief selector and representative of women’s cricket Urooj Mumtaz, former cricketer Umar Gul and former test cricketer Ali Naqvi. were included.
The statement said that PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan and Director of International Cricket Zakir Khan will be part of the committee as associate members.
Iqbal Qasim, after being appointed as the head of the cricket committee, said that he is grateful to the PCB for entrusting him with this important responsibility and will try to give the best results in the light of his experience.
Iqbal Qasim has taken 171 and 12 wickets respectively in 50 Tests and 15 ODIs for Pakistan, besides taking 999 wickets in 246 domestic matches.
He played domestic cricket from 1971 to 1992 i.e. about 21 years, apart from being the Chairman of the Cricket Committee, he has also served as the Manager and Chief Selector of the National Cricket Team in the PCB and as a member of the Domestic Tournament Monitoring Committee.
