The Tunisian storyteller, filmmaker, and visual artist, Nasser Khemir, is displaying a unique exhibition in one of the fine art corridors in the capital, Tunis, called “Love,” in which he narrates the “sixty names of love” among the Arabs.

The exhibition, which will be held on November 16 and 17, brings to mind the sixty names of love, as enumerated by the Arabs, and as mentioned in a previous book of his that he published in 2021 under the name “Love,” which was published in French.

Nasser Khmeir, who is also a film director, moves from writing to drawing to express these meanings, taking the desert dictionary as his reference, whether in writing or drawing. The desert refers to expanse as well as to wandering and loss, and the lover who reaches the point of desertification when he is unable to reach his beloved. He becomes on the verge of destruction and on the brink of the abyss.

These meanings were present in Nasser Khmeir’s paintings that he had previously participated in an exhibition held at the Institute of Arab and Mediterranean Cultures in Geneva. Some of the paintings displayed in his book “Love” published in 2021, in which he presents in each of the four seasons (the desert, the language , Love, and Death) Definitions in French and English for each Arabic name for love.

Through “Ishq,” or the sixty words that say love in Arabic, the artist presents a selection of names regarding this feeling of “the beloved in the state of desertification” and love as “an absolute feeling,” through several fairly modern lines, especially since Al-Nasser Khmeir A multidisciplinary artist, he is a painter, writer, film director and storyteller.

Khmer planned, from cinema, to painting and sculpture, from calligraphy and from writing to storytelling, to build a bridge between the two banks, between the north and the south, and the east and the west, and his plastic works were the subject of many exhibitions in both Europe and Tunisia, in national museums, such as the Museum of Art. Speaking in Paris and the Center Pompidou as well as in many art galleries around the world.
Khmeir expressed his art through cinema, writing, poetry, novels, drawing, photography, and calligraphy. Al-Nasser Khmeir was also influenced by the bright colors of Paul Kelly, so he developed his thinking by working on the sixty names of love in the Arabic language using a series of colors, writings, traces, and signs.

Al-Nasser Khmeir’s literary works are approximately fifteen books, and they are constantly growing, from his first book, “The Ghoula” (1975) to his latest work, “Love” (2021). Since his first film, “The Story of the Land of the Good Lord” (1975), he has written and directed regarding Fifteen feature films, the latest of which is the animated film “Cloud of Lovers” (2023).

His films have won many prestigious awards around the world, most notably “The Desert Trilogy,” which is shown in more than a hundred American universities and others around the world. In 2017, his film “Lighthouses of the Desert” (produced in 1984) was nominated as a world classic in Venice, in addition to many other films that he directed and toured around the world.
