On Friday at 3 p.m., more than 3,000 church bells should ring across Austria. In the Archdiocese of Salzburg there are more than 300 – from the Salzburg Cathedral to the small parish church in the Tyrolean Unterland. With the campaign, the archdiocese and Caritas want to draw attention to the fight once morest global famine and create awareness of the situation of millions of people around the world who do not have enough to eat and drink. By the way, Caritas emphasizes: “Participation – for example with the bicycle bell – is allowed!”
The sound of a bell does not go unnoticed
Archbishop Franz Lackner: “Wherever we are. The sound of a bell never leaves our ears and our minds unaffected, even if we only register it in passing. On July 28, the bells invite us to pause in memory of hunger in the world, of the many who are threatened by it.”
735 million people suffer from hunger worldwide
According to current figures from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), around 735 million people worldwide suffer from hunger, which means that almost every tenth person is affected. Johannes Dines, Director of Caritas Salzburg: “Political and economic crises as well as climate change are making the situation of entire sections of the population worse. We at Caritas stretch out our many hands and act so that people can build a life worth living once more in their homeland.”
