The year 2023 will be a good year for the Strasbourg Christmas market. The most famous end-of-year market is expected to break all records this year. According to initial estimates, no less than three million curious people walked the aisles and scrutinized the chalet stalls. So obviously, on the sellers’ side, the time has come for satisfaction.

“Compared to last year, we doubled our turnover” says Philippe. Leaning over his steaming pots of Spaetzle (pasta made from flour and eggs, editor’s note), he has something to smile about. Nearly 300 to 500 people per day flocked to his stand, Place du Château, to taste these Alsatian specialties.

“We achieved our best scores in terms of turnover”

“It was a bit crazy, we didn’t expect it. From the first weekend, we said to ourselves that we were going to have to produce 20 to 30% more while being very positive and we decided was cheated because in the end, we completely went through the ceiling. In three years of existence, we achieved our best scores in terms of turnover”, explains the exhibitor at the microphone of Europe 1.

Same observation at “la Petite France”, Clément Berger’s stand. Even if this seller of Christmas cookies and cookie cutters prefers not to reveal his figures, he also achieved his best score in five years, particularly because the tourists were there.

Foreign tourists are back

“From a purely attendance point of view, we have never seen that, but really never seen that,” he insists. “There are a lot of foreigners, notably a lot of Spaniards and Italians, quite a few Americans too. Asian tourists have also returned. So, overall, we are in for a record year,” adds Clément , very satisfied.

According to Alsace Destination Tourisme, the turnover of businesses has increased by 15 to 20% this year. So, as Christian, who sells Christmas decorations on Place Saint-Thomas, says: “We’ll rest in January.”
