This year, the Cultural Heritage Department of the Vilnius City Municipality is carrying out revisions of cultural heritage accounting documents on the basis of research, as well as inventorying the wooden buildings of Šnipiškii that have survived to this day, creating an exceptional urban structure. At the same time, as the Vilnius City Municipality assures, “attention is also paid to the dialogue with the residents of the wooden Šnipiškii”.

The first such dialogue was a meeting held by the municipality at the end of January with an interested local community, where possible activities were discussed and the needs and ideas of the residents were heard.

“The goals of the activities organized this year: together with the community, to strengthen the identity of Šnipiškii; to discuss and clearly present the ‘rules’ for how timber houses and new development should be maintained in the area; to discuss how heritage protection and development can work sustainably and harmoniously with the historical urban uniqueness of Šnipiškii – the spirit of the place.

The aim is also to encourage people living in the wooden Šnipiškės to protect and nurture the trees together, taking into account their capabilities and the socioeconomic situation of the area”, – in a statement following the meeting vilnius.lt its organizers wrote.

Residents of Šnipiškii who participated in the meeting say that they were left with more questions than they received answers to.
