EXPOSURE. “Marcel Proust, the factory of the work”, at the BNF
Manuscripts, photos, objects, costumes, paintings – nearly 370 documents in total – are brought together in this exhibition, the fourth devoted to the writer by the National Library of France (BNF). This time, visitors are invited to discover the stages of the composition of his masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time, thanks to the exceptional Proust collection at the BNF – where the novelist’s sheets, notebooks, manuscripts and corrected typescripts are kept, i.e. nearly seven thousand pages – and other public or private collections.
You will learn, for example, that in 1918, a typist from Gallimard pasted the corrected proofs ofIn the shade of young girls in flowersin order to insert the long handwritten additions that Proust called his « paperolles ». The writer, seduced by the process, had the idea of a deluxe edition – some of these superb plates are presented at the BNF. Proust was the first to realize that his drafts formed a work within a work. It is this that this magnificent exhibition and its catalog allow us to explore. Jean-Louis Jeannelle

BOOK. “Proust, the file”, by Jean-Yves Tadié
Professor Emeritus at the Sorbonne, editor ofIn Search of Lost Time in the “Bibliothèque de la Pléiade” (Gallimard, 1987-1989), author of several essays on the writer, of an authoritative biography (republished by Folio in two volumes, 688 p., €9.90 and 832 p., €9.90) and innumerable articles and prefaces, Jean-Yves Tadié appears to be the chief Proustian: few events occur in the vicinity of the Research that he has instigated or patronizes in one way or another.
So he is everywhere in this centenary, even if he does not publish any unpublished books. Multiplied in prefaces or interventions during the various events announced, it also seizes the opportunity to republish and complete Proust, the filean essential tool for both neophyte and familiar, which allows you to have at hand everything you need to know to penetrate the continent of Research, but which also catches the interest of the reader by the love it shows. And that he shares thanks to the driving force of his serenely passionate style. Florent Georgesco
