In search of lightness Spherik offers less heavy electric bikes

Electric-assisted bicycle (EAB) designers are constantly looking to reduce the weight of their frames, so that riders can enjoy both the power of electric assistance and the maneuverability of traditional bicycles. This is what the Quebec company Spherik has accomplished.

The designer, distributor and retailer of Quebec bicycles Spherik is currently at the Eurobike show in Germany, to present to the world its new family of five Super Light bicycles, equipped with electric drive systems from the Swiss engine manufacturer Maxon, which works with the NASA and supplies the engines for Tesla cars.

These are bikes that stand out for their weight comparable to those of muscle bikes, then their look that does not make it possible to guess whether it is a VAE or a traditional model. Spherik therefore offers “powerful assisted bicycles, which are as elegant, light and pleasant to ride as regular bicycles”.

Lightness, maneuverability and assistance

“Currently, in mountain biking, there are 20% of people who want heavy and powerful bikes, but they are not suitable for everyone”, explains Dominique Faure, co-owner of Spherik, because without electric assistance, they are difficult to pedal and control.

“So we’re talking to the 80% of people who don’t want to lose the feelingthe maneuverability, ease and lightness of the muscle bike, then who, when they need it, get significant help with the electric assistance,” he continues.

If, in general, an electric mountain bike weighs around 50 pounds, some companies manage to offer categories that revolve around 40 to 43 pounds. Spherik goes one step further, suggesting a line of mountain bikes (Trail, All Mountain, and Enduro) that range in weight from 36.8 to 40.3 pounds. There is no longer any difference with a muscle bike.

As for the Spherik road and gravel bikes, they come in at 24.7 pounds and 25.4 pounds, respectively. They are therefore all pedelecs that a cyclist can propel using his physical strength alone, with as much maneuverability and pleasure as with a traditional bicycle, while having access to an electric boost when climbing. a slope or when the energy decreases.

It’s the freedom to ride while respecting your level of effort, then maximizing the pleasure. It means no longer having to limit your outings for fear of running out of energy or not being able to keep up with others.

Other qualities

The bikes are equipped with a very high performance motor, which has “an assortment of sensors offering the same pedaling fluidity, the same constant control as an unassisted bike, in addition to creating less jolts and no sudden acceleration” , underlines Mr. Faure.

Each road and gravel bike includes two batteries (a 250wh internal and a 250wh external, for a total of 500wh), which fit inside the frame, giving no indication that they are there. Then by eliminating the friction generated by the motor, battery life increases by 15%, reaching 200 km on a road bike.

These Super Light performance bikes retail for between $8,750 and $14,000, with more affordable lines to come in the next few years. These first lightweight bike models will be available in the spring of 2024, but riders should be able to try them out by the end of the season.
