A little on the sidelines of the hectic and materialistic life that we (almost) all lead, Sébastien Deckers has chosen a simpler existence, with fewer constraints, more in line with his deep values of sharing, active listening, respect… It’s not always easy, of course, to get rid of everything to which Western man has access today, but the 30-year-old, ex-caregiver, really wants to bring his stone to the building of a better world. “No, it’s not easy. There are less simple moments, but, nevertheless, I know with certainty that I am moving in the right direction and that I am heading towards my happiness. I also understood that I was a unifier. On my scale, I want to change things. The path on which I venture is not traced, I am a pioneer, I have no model. I have to invent everything with the enthusiasms and doubts that it represents.”
A few months ago, the Saint-Georgian decided to devote 20 hours a week to others. From the time he offers “live”. To single people, who need company or a hand to go shopping, help them in the garden or cook together, who simply want to chat or share a cinema, a restaurant or a sporting activity… These recently, he thus helped a lady, who had been widowed for a few months, to restore her garden, “in the jungle”in good condition, with a friend of hers, “so that she starts off on the right foot”. He also took another lady for a walk in Liège. “She hadn’t been there 20 years ago, she didn’t dare do it alone. We took a boat trip and had a bite to eat. And this Thursday, she asked me to ‘accompany there again’ but in back-up, so that she “checks” if she feels able to take the train alone, to find her way around the city… “I also spent a day in Namur with a lady and we are going on hikes together.”
What Sébastien Deckers wants, through his punctual nudges, is to give confidence to people who are lonely or frightened or discouraged in advance by a task to be accomplished. “The idea is that eventually they will regain their autonomy.”
€64,000 to finance
On the strength of these first experiences, this time he wants to go a step further. Allow people who do not dare to go solo, whether out of fear or lack of means, to take a short getaway or a long trip. Accompany them, be their guide. “So I would like to buy a fitted van or to have it fitted out. Me, I would be their driver and their guide and I would sleep in a tent next to the van or in a roof tent and I would leave the van to people. I inquired, I would need €64,000. I don’t have these finances but I have the energy to carry out such a project.” The 30-year-old therefore launched a kitty on the Tipeee platform, which will close… on December 24, for Christmas. “I will also, in a few weeks, knock on the doors of businesses in the region so that they can sponsor me.”
Sébastien Deckers hopes in any case to be able to take one day one of his fellow citizens to Mont-Saint-Michel, a place that she has dreamed of discovering for years. “We will make your dream come true together, I told him…”
