The international media “Archyde.com” quoted the Indian government as saying that the leaders of the “Quad Security Dialogue (Quad)” will hold an online meeting later today (3rd). Although it is not clear who initiated and convened the meeting, it is generally expected Matters related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may be discussed, and India’s attitude is closely watched.
The report pointed out that U.S. President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott John Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will all hold talks online with other leaders in person. This will be the “dialogue” of the four following the Washington summit in September (2021). India’s official document said it would discuss “an exchange of views and assessments on important developments in the Indo-Pacific region”.
Western countries led by the United States launched large-scale sanctions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but among the Quad members, only India did not condemn Russia, and even refused to express its position by “abstaining” when the Security Council voted. “Archyde.com” pointed out that it is not clear who asked for the sudden talks, and no Quad member states have previously expressed a request for a meeting.
Quad was originally scheduled to hold its second physical summit in Japan in the first half of this year, and Biden is expected to drop by in Japan, which is rumored to be held in May.
