Visceral fat is a different type of subcutaneous fat, located just under the skin. Here instead, it is stored deep in the abdomen, making it difficult to see.

It is known that only a certain amount of it is needed to protect and isolate vital organs.

However, overeating is a cause for concern due to potential associated health risks such as diabetes, strokes and heart disease.

With that in mind, one expert suggested five ways to reduce visceral fat.

“The best way my clients burn visceral fat starts with a few basics,” said personal trainer and former soccer player Jay Conroy – who works alongside Bio-Synergy nutritionists:

Control portion size.

Focus on cardio exercises.

Change the type of grain you eat to whole grain.

Get a good night’s sleep regularly.

Eat healthy fats.

“I know it’s easier said than done but portion size can really help,” Jay said. “Just changing your portion size can instantly reduce visceral fat by 12%. I recommend using smaller plates.”

“Whether it’s running, rowing, cycling or just walking for 30 minutes, improving your cardio routine can have a huge impact on reducing visceral and hepatic fat,” he said.
