The referee showed a white card for the first time in history in the 1/4 final match of the Women’s Cup of Portugal between Benfica and Sporting. About it informs Sport Bible.
During the game, one of the players became ill, and medical teams from both clubs ran onto the field. After the doctors helped the athlete, the referee showed them a white card as a thank you.
Fans at the stadium greeted this decision of the referee with applause.
The meeting ended with the victory of Benfica with a score of 5:0.
White cards are a new initiative in Portugal. Unlike yellows and reds, which are meant to penalize teams, a white card is shown instead to praise clubs for fair play. The new idea is intended to promote ethical values in sport.
