The Venezuelan national team played against Uruguay on Tuesday, September 10, in the eighth round of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The match took place at the Monumental de Maturín stadium in Monagas, starting at 6:00 pm.

The match ended 0-0, despite Venezuela pressing and having more initiative during the 90+5 minutes, which forced the Celeste to sugar mostly in Uruguay’s half.

The last time Venezuela beat Uruguay in a qualifying match was in August 2001, when both teams were competing for a place in the 2002 World Cup in Korea Japan.

Burgundy bleachers

Before the kick-off, the blue stands of the Estadio Monumental de Maturín were dyed burgundy, thanks to the hundreds of fans who attended the national team match.

The attendees displayed a giant flag with the phrase “Mano, tengo fe” (Hand, I have faith), while at the other end of the room another large white banner was seen that read “Siempre Vinotinto” (Always Vinotinto).

During the match, no flags of Venezuela or any other country or team were seen, this is because their entry is prohibited, according to the regulations published by the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) on its social networks.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a national team match without flags in the stands. Maturín is dyed burgundy, but the tricolor is missing in the stands,” said user @JoelGorozabel on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Among other prohibited items upon entering the premises are alcoholic beverages, food, camera magnifying lenses, balls, flashlights, umbrellas, whistles, and sticks. selfie, spraysbalaclavas, weapons, bags, chairs, thermoses or cups, fireworks, and lasers. In addition, it is prohibited to bring animals to the Monumental de Maturín stadium.

Venezuela in sixth position in the table

La Vinotinto did not manage to score a goal during the match against La Celeste, however, both teams added a point to the South American Qualifiers table.

Following this result, Venezuela is ranked sixth with 10 points, while Uruguay has accumulated 15 points and is ranked third. First and second place are occupied by Argentina (18) and Colombia (16), respectively.

The Venezuelan team played the seventh match against Bolivia on September 5, a team that won with a 4-0 win in El Altoat more than 4,100 meters above sea level, in Bolivia.

Likewise, Venezuela debuted on September 7, 2023 in the South American Qualifiers with a 0-1 defeat against Colombia. However, three days later they achieved a 1-0 victory against Paraguay at minute 90+3 with a goal from striker Salomón Rondón.

In the Venezuela vs. Brazil game, Brazilian Gabriel Magalhães opened the scoring in the 49th minute for the Canarinha, but a goal by Venezuelan Eduardo Bello in the 84th minute sealed the tie.

In the following match, the Venezuelan team scored three goals against the Chilean team. The goals were scored by Yeferson Soteldo, Salomón Rondón and Darwin Machís. While the match against the Ecuadorian team ended with a 0-0 scoreline.
