In pictures: Floods in Cumaná affected several homes

  • The passage of tropical wave number 22 caused flooding in a large part of eastern Venezuela. Several homes were affected in the towns of Cantarrana, Brasil and Sabanita.

Heavy rainfall on July 17 caused several floods in the city of Cumaná, Sucre state. Residents reported on social media that several streets and homes were flooded, although authorities have not reported any major damage so far.

On her X account (formerly Twitter), journalist Ariana Agreda reported that one of the areas with the greatest flooding was the community of Cantarrana, where at least six families from the Nuevo Camino sector were affected. The water also entered several houses in the communities of Brasil and Sabanita, while the Cancamure and Guarapiche Norte avenues were flooded.

According to the National Risk Management System, a strong electrical storm has been recorded in eastern Venezuela since 5:00 pm due to the passage of tropical wave number 22. The organization warned that the rains might extend for more than three hours, and have also affected other states such as Anzoátegui, Monagas and Delta Amacuro.

These floods occur less than a month following the Cumanacoa disaster, when several towns in the Montes municipality were devastated by the overflow of the Manzanares River, leaving an official death toll of six people and more than 31,000 affected.

Sucre Governor Gilberto Pinto also indicated that around 145 businesses were damaged, with total losses amounting to 10 thousand dollars, although local merchants claim that they were never counted. These rains occurred just hours following the state company Hidrológica del Caribe (Hidrocaribe) announced the restoration of water service in the municipality of Montes.

Agreda reported that during the followingnoon of July 17 the flooding of the Arenas River was reported, which remains under surveillance by the authorities. For his part, the mayor of Montes, Tomás Bello, indicated that the flow of the Manzanares River rose once more at the height of the La Fragua sector, one of the most affected by the first floods. However, he clarified that for the moment the situation is not under control.
