In Paris, a cutting-edge hospital service threatened with closure

The strength of the symbol. Hematology at Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris (10e), is a flagship of the discipline. People come from all over the region for treatment. From the rest of Europe for training. However, it is this renowned service, and more precisely its clinical immunopathology floor, in charge of rare diseases and certain hematological cancers, which is threatened with closure, wants to alert the healthcare team.

Staff and patients call for a rally on Tuesday April 19 in front of the establishment of the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), anchored in the northeast of the capital. The service will no longer be able to function “in the very short term”, they warn in a letter addressed to the candidates for the presidential election. The reason: the lack of night nurses.

From 1is June, the table of the guards thus does not count any more registered, according to the doctors of the service. It is therefore impossible to ensure the permanence and safety of care. Since September, the night team of this service in which a high technicality is required, has been decimated: there are two nurses left, instead of the necessary twelve – and one of them is leaving this summer. It is therefore caregivers from the day team, her in full, who take turns at night, with in parallel an ever greater use of temporary workers.

“In the long run, it becomes difficult, the change of pace, for the body but also socially, summarizes Jordan Le Solliec, 29, a nurse who has worked night shifts since January, who will return to his day job in May. We hang on, but we know that in the long term, it won’t work, people are exhausted, they’re going to leave… The situation is really sad, especially for the patients. »

“On the edge of a red line”

There is an urgency to “recognize the hardship of night work and value it significantly”write the signatories of the alert letter to candidates, denouncing the derisory level currently practiced, with compensation of 9.63 euros gross per night. “The public authorities must give the hospital the means to carry out its mission”they argue.
