With an eye on recent developments in Middle East and the growing concerns about possible escalation in the region after the Iranian attacks against Israelh Summit of the Mediterranean Member States of the EU (MED9) is taking place today in Cyprus, with the participation of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakou Mitsotakis.
During the Synod, which will take place in Paphosregional developments will be discussed. Of particular interest is participation of the King of Jordan, Abdullahwho will discuss the latest developments in the Middle East with MED9 leaders, as well as EU-Jordan relations.
It is worth noting that this is the first EU Summit. before the European Council meeting next week (October 16-18). The MED9 Summit will also be attended by President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenwhich makes the meeting a platform for discussing issues that will concern the European Council.
In addition to the developments in the Middle East, the agenda of the Synod includes Immigration issue – which is coming back to the fore due to the controls at the internal borders of the E.U. and fears of increased migration flows due to events in Lebanon – the competitiveness of the European economyh Draghi reportand developments in the war in Ukraine. Also, the priorities of the new institutional cycle of the European Commission will be discussed.
THE Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to underline the need for coordinated EU actions. regarding developments in the Middle East.
Regarding migration, the prime minister will reiterate the importance of guarding the EU’s external borders, as well as the need to strengthen frontline countries. It will also emphasize the importance of migrant returns and cooperation with third countries, while emphasizing the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum.
In the afternoon, the heads of state and government will hold a joint press conference.
Finally, it is recalled that MED9 was created in 2013 at the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim of strengthening the cooperation and the role of the seven original Mediterranean member states of the EU. – France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Cyprus. In 2021, Slovenia and Croatia were added.
