Early December 2023. A thousand fans braved the cold and wiggled in front of the controversial Afida Turner at the Le Society club in Bordeaux. A year earlier, it was on the boards of Cabaret Blonde Venus that the first edition of The Solo. With half as many participants.
At the origin of this evening and the La Solo association, Alice Kieffer. This young hairdresser has launched into the unknown in the fall of 2022 by organizing an event that combines “100% girl” stand-up, hip-hop battles and drag queen shows. The performances are provided by local artists, paid by the hat. But the originality lies above all in the challenge offered to the interested public: that of coming alone, and not in a group of friends. Alice wants to prove that freeing yourself from social codes to go out alone, while having a festive time, is possible.
A concept that has evolved
A year later, however, she admits: “All that remains of this concept is the name. Today, the audience has doubled, and mostly comes in groups. » Another difference is significant: the price of entry. If the first edition was free, you had to pay five euros for subsequent ones. Today, entry can reach 15 euros when certain artists come. “There have been developments,” continues Alice Kieffer. Blonde Venus has become too small to accommodate all these people. We preferred to choose a larger venue, because we also bring artists from Paris. To pay them, we had to increase the entry price. »
Mixture of genres, once morest a backdrop of feminism
However, the essence of the program remains the same: highlighting female artists, to ignite the scene differently. For example, at La Solo evenings we find the dance collectives Meute Célestial, which improvises hip-hop battles, or Human’s, which performs on elaborate choreographies, while involving the public. Without forgetting the female comedians, for whom La Solo is sometimes an opportunity to test their sketches, and the drag queen shows.
The diversity of this scene is found in the audience, of different ages, styles and genres. Leaning on the bar, Axelle knows the event well. She came with friends, “especially for the hip-hop scene”, but also convinced Yamina, her mother, to follow her: “My daughter introduced me to this place, which I didn’t know. In fact, I never go to town, well it’s very rare… But this world is pleasant! »
A year following its beginnings, the association continues to bring together mostly local and female artists. But there might be something new in 2024, according to Alice Kieffer. “We’re going to take a break following this birthday party. Refresh our ideas, and come back with new proposals. » Among the innovations envisaged: “bringing more artists from Paris, to mix them with our Bordeaux artists”.
