“There was silence over the place. It wasn’t suckers who came there, it was Aalborg’s upper class.”
This is how the serial entrepreneur Jesper Buch, known from Løvens Hule on DR, writes regarding the bodega he once owned in a North Jutland seaside resort.
The description of the customers still holds up 25 years later, but now the place is threatened with its existence.
Again.
There is still light in the windows, and behind the shiny dark brown bar stands a woman with her red hair in a tight ponytail.
She languishes a green bottle over the counter.
– 35 kroner, she says.
And already here, the awake bar guest knows that this is a pub that is not quite like the others.
The lessee of the legendary brown tavern Lanternen in Blokhus has terminated the agreement, and the owner doesn’t care any more, so he wants to convert the building into a shop, but now a group of citizens have come together to form a cooperative, where the users of the place can buy a share and help preserve the place. But customers are willing to pay. It is not so important to them what the beer costs.
– It is probably the most expensive pub in North Jutland, says tenant Nadja Vinther honestly.
Still, it produces a deficit. It has done so all three years she has been behind the bar.
Buch’s bodega dream
Now, it is – maybe – slut.
– The costs of running it are too high. I have tried everything and all personal reserves are used. For the first two years I was not paid at all. It’s no use taking money to work every day, she says.
That is why she has thrown in the towel and terminated the lease at the end of the year, even though the legendary brown pub on the west coast is her only dream.
A dream that the entrepreneur Jesper Buch also shared in the 90s.
